Under construction

15 October 2018

Walking through Manchester city centre recently, it’s amazing how much redevelopment and building work is still going on.  On most streets there is scaffolding or hoarding to navigate around.  And that’s not a bad thing at all - buildings being renovated to create new spaces, new businesses moving into the city, it’s all very positive.  But for those business still trading and stuck under the scaffolding, or who are hidden from view on the other side of a large hoarding, staying visible to the public while work continues is crucial.  And that’s where signage comes in…

Still open for business
It might be completely outside of your control.  You are still open but the building you rent space in is having a refit or refurb carried out a few doors down, or above.  Or a neighbouring building might be having work done on their premises.  If that is the case and scaffolding or hoarding goes up, then a sign letting people know you’re still open for business is a good idea.  While your current signage is out of view, so is your branding and contact details, and you risk losing passing trade.  Speak with the construction company and if there is opportunity to put up your own sign with your branding on the scaffolding or hoarding, getting a temporary sign made is a good investment.

Development plans shared
We recently supplied and installed an extra-large external sign for the Stretford Mall, which is currently undergoing a massive transformation.  The sign, facing the main A56 Chester Road into Manchester gives an artist’s impression of how the new entrance to the mall will look.  For any site where buildings have been taken down or parts are being refurbished and there’s no access, brand awareness is important. That, and keeping people updated of what they can expect in the future when the work is done.  Plus, when they can expect it.  A sign that informs keeps people interested and looking forward to visiting the new building when it’s ready.  Oh, and of course signage helps makes the building site look better, detracting from the detritus and upheaval behind it!

Coming soon!
Construction and property development companies use graphics or signage on hoarding around their sites.  The hoarding itself is necessary from a health and safety perspective, but it also makes a great platform for advertising and communication.  They often communicate branding, be it the construction firm or property developer’s branding, imagery of what’s being built and any sales information, including when the project is due to be completed.

Small businesses going through a transformation, either on acquisition of a premises or a temporary closure for refurbishment can do the same.  If there’s any kind of hoarding put up, then laminate signs or a weatherproof banner could easily be attached.  But if there’s no hoarding and you want a more affordable option, filling windows with one-way vinyl is a great way to communicate to the outside all that’s going on the inside, and when you’ll be back trading as usual.
